The Te Taumata Entrepreneurs Programme is a 10-week kaupapa Māori entrepreneurship journey for rangatahi, co-developed by DNA/Native Tech and Te Taumata o Ngāti Whakaue.
Designed for future business owners, digital disruptors, creatives, service providers and start-up SMEs, the programme supports rangatahi (aged 14-19) to move from idea to action. It gives young people the tools, confidence and practical support to explore entrepreneurship in a way that is grounded in whakapapa, identity and kaupapa Māori values.
At the heart of the programme is a simple but powerful goal, to help rangatahi turn their observations, passions and ideas into real business opportunities.
Across the 10 weeks, participants move through three key phases:
- The first phase, He Kākano, focuses on whakawhanaungatanga, identity and exploration. Rangatahi learn about the whakapapa of local, national and global economies, explore the role of pakihi Māori and begin growing their own ideas through the Ideas Lab and Start Up Incubator.
- The second phase, Mahi a te Mahi, is where rangatahi begin building, testing and refining their products or services. This phase is hands-on, practical and focused on learning by doing. Participants choose a pathway that fits their strengths and interests, including artisan products, service-based business, tech development or maker space production.
- The third phase, Ngā Pakihi Hou, helps rangatahi get launch-ready. They learn about branding, marketing, packaging, online presence and how to connect with customers. This phase prepares them to take their venture to market with more confidence and clarity.
A key part of the programme is real-world experience. Rangatahi will create an online presence, attend Saturday markets at Kuirau Park and take part in a special Whānau Market Day where they can share, sell and promote their business ideas. This gives participants the opportunity to test their thinking with real customers and build confidence in a supportive environment.
Through the programme, rangatahi gain entrepreneurial confidence, practical business skills, stronger cultural connection, real-world experience and pathways into employment, further education or entrepreneurship.
The Te Taumata Entrepreneurs Programme is not just about starting businesses. It is about growing rangatahi who are confident, capable and grounded in identity. It is about giving rangatahi the space, support and tools to create impact for themselves, their whānau and their communities.
This programme is open to all ethnicities. Nau mai!
